When you find yourself in an unfortunate situation, interviewing a list of potential mitigation and construction companies is last on your list of things to do. But when it comes to your property and personal belongings, finding a reputable, trusted company to work with is extremely important.

In most instances, homeowners and insurance agents will seek out a water mitigation company to come clean up the mess, dry the home and belongings and start the rebuild process. After all, they work with water and flood damage day in and day out. But does that mean you should only consider hiring a water mitigation company?

We’ve put together a list of why you should hire a licensed contractor instead of a water mitigation company. It is not uncommon for us to get called to clean up a mess that was missed or completed improperly by a mitigation company. We truly care for our customers, and having to watch them tear apart their house for a second time is not something we like to see.

So why do water mitigation companies miss certain areas of a home? How do these mistakes happen that allow damage and mold in the future? The simple answer is this: water mitigation companies deal strictly with water damage restoration. Typically, they do not have a licensed contractor on staff. They will subcontract out their rebuilds. Their technicians are only trained in water mitigation, making it very easy for them to miss blind spots, hidden cavities and built up floor coverings. Here are some photos of a recent job that we were subcontracted by a nationwide water damage restoration company to rebuild. When we arrived on the scene, we knew right away that something wasn’t right. The company had completely missed the built up floor covering – and there was still water (and mold!) in the customers home.

Unfortunately, this happens often. We’ve been to many homes that were declared dry to the home owners and insurance companies, but in reality they weren’t. Here is our breakdown on why you should hire a water damage restoration company that has a licensed contractor on staff:

  • They will have knowledge on both water mitigation and construction & rebuilds.
  • You are able to hire one single company to complete your job from dry-out to rebuild. Insurance agents also love having one company handling everything from A-Z.
  • When hiring a single company that handles everything, there is less downtime until completion
  • The chances of having blind spots, cavities or built up floor coverings missed is slim to none.
